Jade can refer to two different materials, jadeite and nephrite - the most  highly sought after currently being Burmese Jadeite. Jade in both varieties  has deep roots in Chinese culture having been mined and worked in China since the Stone Age. It became revered and was known as the Imperial gem - used in carving, decorations, ceremoial purposes and jewellery. It was also highly prized by the Maori people, as well as Meso-American cultures -the Aztecs valued gold many times more than its weight in gold.
